CPR Saves Lives

On June 12, 2021, during the Euro 2020, Denmark player Christian Eriksen slumped during a match against Finland, the medical team immediately rushed to him, while fans and fellow players prayed for his recovery. One of the first things the medical team started with was CPR. When Kyle Woods a marathon runner, crossed the finish line in 2019, rather than celebrating, he was rushed to the hospital for cardiac arrest. Today the marathon runner owes his life to the medical team who performed CPR immediately after he collapsed.

Recent statistics from WHO suggest that sudden cardiac arrest is rapidly becoming a leading cause of death around the world, including Nigeria. Unfortunately, a typical emergency response may take 30 minutes or more in Nigeria. It is during those critical minutes that CPR can provide oxygenated blood to the victim\’s brain and the heart, dramatically increasing their chance of survival. If properly instructed, almost anyone can learn and perform CPR.

What is CPR?

CPR or Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation (breathing) in an effort to manually preserve brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

When a person suffers from a cardiac arrest, you should begin CPR immediately. Here are 7 steps to take when someone collapses from suspected cardiac arrest:

  1. Approach Safely
  2. Check for response
  3. Call ERA
  4. Open airway
  5. Check pulse & breathing
  6. Chest compressions
  7. Begin rescue breaths

  1. After I initially commented I seem to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are
added- checkbox and now whenever a comment is added I get four emails
with the same comment. Is there a means you can remove me from
    that service? Thanks a lot!
