How to prevent a fire in your home

Heat is very helpful in the kitchen but it can also have catastrophic consequences. It is a lot easier to prevent a fire than to put one out. By putting in place simple, cost-effective preventive measures, loss of lives and property can be avoided.

Here are a few things you can do to prevent a fire in your home:

  • Switch off all appliances: All appliances that have the potential to heat up, unplug it or switch it off when not in use.
  • Be extra careful with candles: Never ever leave a candle unattended to. Always, blow it out before leaving the room.
  • Always check your cords for damage: If you have an extension cord running through your TV or other appliances, make sure you check them for damage regularly. Frayed wires can cause a spark that sets the rug or furniture on fire.
  • Install Smoke detectors: Smoke detectors are a great way to quickly detect fires and prevent loss of life. Make sure that your smoke detector is functioning properly. Change your batteries twice a year.
  • Keep flammable materials inside proper containers and store them properly.
